What determines the success of an online video campaign has been debated not only by us here at Preview Networks, but by industry experts alike. Although there is no one secret ingredient which makes a video go viral (check out this Ted talk video on why), good content spreads like a virus, whether you intended it to or not. Good content triggers are different for everyone but chances are if you make something informative as well as entertaining, it will catch on.

Relevancy of the video content to your brand helps link the cognitive side with receiver involvement (Source: Wright, P.L.). In other words, this could help determine whether a user might actively share the video or not. Not only that, but relevancy in terms of alignment of the brand need with the audience reached and context provided by the publisher, increases the chance the right person at the right time is seeing your video (Source: Gigaom).

The Evian Baby advertising campaigns are an excellent example of this. According to Evian, there is a history of its brand being connected with babies which dates back to 1935. Evian was first recommended as the perfect water for babies in France back then, and still to this day it is the number one water used by mothers for the same reason due to the pH-neutral mineral composition (Source: International Business Times).

Evian’s “Roller Babies” campaign in 2009 currently holds the official Guinness World Record for most viral video of all time (Source: Business Insider). This year, they are back with their “Baby & Me” campaign and if the views on YouTube  and mentions on Twitter are any indication of this year’s campaign success, Evian is well on their way to another viral video success.

Preview Networks is delighted to have been involved in contributing to the campaign’s audience relevancy and reach outside of YouTube on premium publisher sites in 11 different countries in addition to a dynamic image creation on top of the custom player created specifically for YouTube. A combination of on and off YouTube syndication strategy ensured the campaign received maximum exposure. However, at the end of the day sometimes great content speaks for itself.

Founded in May 2011, Rightster has become YouTube’s ninth-largest partner and its second fastest growing one (Source: FT.com). The deal extends Rightster’s YouTube services across Europe making Rightster the leading entertainment distributor in key  markets. Rightster will welcome the addition of Preview Network’s client roster that includes many major movie distributors, mainstream media agencies, and brands such as Disney, Havaianas, MTV, Peugeot and Sony. The deal will allow Rightster to extend its YouTube management and direct media sales capabilities while also enriching and strengthening the solutions it offers to the movie industry.

Rightster has grown to employ 220 people in 12 offices from the UK to India, the US and Australia, with revenues of $1.5m a month as of December 2012. The company has secured the rights to offer live and on demand Australian Football League games outside Australia and New Zealand. Other customers include IMG Fashion, which has given Rightster exclusive rights to stream the high-profile fashion week shows in New York live online and ITN, for which it distributed footage of the royal wedding to 1.5m viewers in 12 countries. Rightster will manage subscription packages as well as the technology required to provide content to computers, tablets and smartphones (Source FT.com).

There are many great things about working for an international company. Sharing cultures and traditions is just one and introducing fellow colleagues to commonly used greetings from native countries is another.  We believe the combination and active use of all that knowledge is what makes us unique at Preview Networks. We are like one big great multi-cultural family and we try to treat our customers and partners with the same personal touch and transparency.

This year we decided to be a little creative with our holiday greeting to our employees and shared a JibJab greeting from our PN Management team, a very common website used during the holidays in the U.S. between family members and friends. Not only is it a good use of online video in our marketing strategy, it was just plain fun to create and an opportunity to entertain. We believe good content is worth sharing, so we have published it here as a sign of our appreciation for being faithful readers, sharers, customers, partners, or just passer-byers.

Happy Holidays from Preview Networks! May your 2013 be as bright as we forecast it to be. Click the picture above for the eCard greeting, and be sure to check out our Online Video Trends for 2013 posting on January 2nd.

After the launch of the German market in 2008, Preview Networks has steadily increased services across the country. However, the most recent partnership with S&L Medien Gruppe takes our service capabilities to a new level. With the same core belief that quality content is the driver for audience and engagement, Preview Networks teamed up with S&L to expand their video syndication service in Germany, adding an additional 100 service providers to over 450 media partners already receiving content in the current network.

S&L Medien Gruppe is a Munich-based entertainment service provider connecting media partners, brands and agencies in Germany with online video content such as movie trailers, behind the scenes, movie tips and other online features produced by S&L Medienproduktion. Preview Networks has been syndicating movie trailers and PR material for the major film industry since 2005 and expanded into the online advertising industry in 2011 with launch of their brandcast and addience products, focusing on content management and campaign syndication.

Preview Networks’ services compliment S&L’s content by extending distribution to mobile, tablets and connected TVs in addition to gaining audience received by the company-owned Filmtrailer.com sites and mobile app partnerships. S&L’s company-owned websites such as cinefacts.de, moviemaze.de, kinoundco.de, as well as around 100 websites of cinema operators through the Cineweb.de network, together with Kinopolis.de and Cineplex.de., will now feature enhanced online movie content as a result of the partnership.

In the digital marketing landscape and within a content marketing context, there has been an ongoing dialogue regarding user generated content (UGC) versus professionally produced material or branded content.

Is one better than the other or should they even be compared?

This topic has been analysed from a textual point of view using product reviews, reader comments, and customer testimonials as an example. This UGC content is often posted on online platforms such as websites and blogs, the latter of which could also be argued to be a form of editorial content which we will address later (Source: RankPop). UGC has also become an interesting topic to discuss from a graphical content point of view with the emergence of Instagram and the popularity of Facebook and Pinterest platforms. However, perhaps the most popular example of UGC is where video content is concerned, and where YouTube is the platform most often used. Essentially, UGC can be defined as any “material your organisation has not commissioned and paid for” which brings home the point about blogs mentioned above as nearly every brand or business has a blog (Source: onlinejournalismblog.com). UGC could also be looked at in an earned media context discussed in past posts, as it is the conversation by consumers that happens around the brand. It has been argued that UGC provides depth and increases confidence in a brand or product from a consumer point of view, so it’s no wonder why it’s a popular form of content integrated into any brand strategy (Source: RankPop).

A recent study from comScore aimed to answer the question posed above, which has become a critical conversation for today’s digital advertisers: ‘How do user-generated videos complement professionally-produced content, if at all?’ The study compared professionally-produced content and user-generated product videos and actually concluded the two forms of content work better together than on their own. According to Frank Findley, Vice President, Research and Development at comScore: “While marketers may already be familiar with the effectiveness of professional video content alone, these results suggest that even greater returns can be had by combining their use with authentic, user-generated content.” In the study, professionally-produced content combined with UGC product videos resulted in significantly higher lifts when used together versus separately. While professional content on its own resulted in a higher percentage of respondents understanding the importance of the brand message, UGC was more successful at producing emotional intensity and ease of relating to the consumer (Source: comScore).

A good example of a brand incorporating both professional content and UCG in their latest campaign efforts is Samsung. With various advertising campaigns for the Olympic Games, the messaging centered around one key concept which was how technology today allows everyone to be involved in the event in various ways (Source: Campaign Live). Instead of just talking about it, they created action by using brand ambassadors like David Beckham and Jamie Oliver who encouraged everyday users or bloggers rather, to use technology to capture the spirit of the games in London with the Global Blogger initiative. As a result Samsung was acknowledged as receiving “the gold medal” in terms of biggest uplift in online visits for an Olympic Sponsor (Source: The Wall).
