Summer Movie Trends

By Heather Timmerman Because We Love Film Comments Off

What is it about summer movies that gets the industry planning earlier each year and keeps us consumers coming back for more? Shouldn’t we be outside enjoying the warm summer nights on the back porch or barbecuing on the beach? Or has the act of going to the movies in the summer-time become so ingrained in our fun-time routines that part of what Image courtesy of wikipedia commons/assistant08makes the summer well, summer is enjoying a blockbuster on the big screen?

I like to think our summer movie fascination might have been influenced by drive-in movie theaters that peaked back in the 1950′s, but there is no data to really back that one up. The target audience of the drive-in at its inception was families due to the fact that the kids could be as loud as they like in the car and not bother anyone else.  A quick look at the latest summer move infographics courtesy of Column Five for Esquire, includes a whole lot of movies in the “fun for the whole family” category for 2011, if you ask me.  It seems the target audience of the summer blockbuster is still families, so at least that trend remains.

According to www.the-numbers.com the summer months of May, June, and July produced 6 of the 10 top grossing movies of 2010, so this is one trend that is not going away anytime soon.  However, one trend the studios cannot predict is the summer weather, which if you happen to live in Northern Europe has not been the sunniest of seasons. Yet another reason to grab the raincoat and head for the movie theaters!

Since we’re in the business of distributing promotional video content which includes movie trailers, we thought it was a good idea to survey our network of loyal Filmtrailer viewers to identify the needs in the consumer market.  Not only does this give us a better understanding of our business and the consumer but it helps our customers as well.

We published the survey across nine European markets in their local languages on the country specific Filmtrailer websites.  Filmtrailer.com is a display site and/or showcase of all the movie trailers we have in our network in each local market.  No advertising has been done to this site.  The traffic generated is organic in nature, but given the fact that 2,603 viewers responded to our survey in less than a month we think that’s a pretty ok number.

The majority of viewers liked all genre of movies, but Germany and the Netherlands seemed to like action movies more.  67% of movie viewers find out about new movies online first which is an important statistic to note considering the amount of money spent on TV advertising.  69% of viewers watch the trailer online immediately when they hear about it and 77% watch trailers online the most, compared to 24% on TV and 30% in theaters.

So the theme here is online.  Not only do movie viewers hear about a new movie online first, but they go online to watch it once they find out about it from other sources.  The most popular destination to view trailers online seem to be cinema sites at 74%.  Entertainment sites like MTV and IMDB follow at 22% respectively.

What can all this data tell us?  Most importantly that 44% of consumers decide to go to a movie after watching the movie trailer online and 35% would like to find local showtimes and buy movie tickets right after they watch the trailer.  That’s an immediate commitment TV can’t compete with.  Just imagine the possibilities of a fully integrated movie promotional campaign.

Every once in a while you encounter a piece of market data that truly speaks your language and makes the point you sometimes have a hard time communicating yourself.  That report for Preview Networks is the Moviegoers 2010 Report by Stradella Road.  This report confirmed what we have seen and felt in the market:

  • 86% of moviegoers go online via computer or mobile device at least once a day
  • 93% use internet search to find more information about movies
  • 45% of heavy moviegoers have looked at aggregation sites
  • Mobile penetration has reached 90%

What this means to us is that it is more important than ever to continue to expand our presence in mobile as well as our already strong media presence online.   What this means for our customers is that they are in the right space; as we are constantly striving to stay on top of the emerging technology channels and trends in video content distribution.

Being a lover of films and stories, I was saddened to get the news of the passing of Lena Horne, the first Black actor to become a contract player for a mayor Hollywood studio. Talented, beautiful, and a symbol of the fight for Civil Rights in the USA, Horne, who died this past May 9 was a true pioneer and an inspiration to anyone who loves moving pictures and the industry of dreams.

Lena Mary Calhoun Horne (June 30, 1917 – May 9, 2010) . American actress. May she rest in Peace.
